North of Greece just across the Adriatic from Italy lays the crossroads of Europe and Asia. For decades this small but very valuable piece of land kept to itself so well that many people never knew it existed. Then in the late 1980's the former Yugoslavia splintered in to several European states that hadn't been mentioned for generations. One of these small nations is today Croatia, claiming its place along the Adriatic, from its southern most city of Dubrovnik (the Pearl of the Adriatic) meandering north dotting the coast with hundreds of islands to its northern most peninsula of Istria (Croatia’s wine country). Croatia’s crystal clear water, fertile well healed soil, and fresh clean air make it not only the ideal place to live, but also the perfect place to grow grapes for wine, olives for oil, and provide an abundant space for live stock to graze allowing content heards of sheep, goats, and cattle to do what they do best, provide milk for cheese.
This laid back country of 6 million people enjoys many luxuries, and in these times the country flourishes, providing some of the finest products to much of Europe, but Croatia has not always enjoyed such peace. The land has been traded by many empires over many centuries the Ottomans, the Greeks, and the Austro-Hungarians to name a few. While this turbulent past was difficult, each group left a gift with Croatia. In this modern age Croatia now enjoys the flavors of its past in its food, wine, architecture and culture. Today Croatia has taken all those small gifts over those centuries and is able to provide a place to appreciate the convergence of many cultures, these are no longer the bi-products of past invaders, this is now good Croatian living.
We welcome all to enjoy a taste of Croatia, a nation where the people have figured out how to take all the best from the past, and make it their own. We hope you enjoy.
